Connectivity Test

Option 1 - Ping Test

If you have completed step 1 (see connectivity) you should now be able to ping the server by its NetBIOS name.  Click Start, Run, type CMD and press Enter to launch a command prompt window. Type the following at the prompt

PING SHELLEY5

and press Enter. You should receive 4 replies. If you receive no replies or an error message about an unknown host, usually the cause is a file extension on the HOSTS file name (see connectivity).

In most cases you should not waste your time trying to set up Outlook unless and until you can successfully ping the server. However, if you're behind a firewall, some firewalls prevent ping traffic. If that is the case, you will not be able to ping anything. To verify this situation, try to ping www.yahoo.com. If you can't ping Yahoo, you probably have a firewall in the way, or another network problem.
