Outlook Modes
A customer of Exchange Hosting Service is licensed to use the latest
version of Outlook, so we can provide you with Outlook 2007, which we highly
recommend. Contact us for a download link. If you're stuck with Outlook 2000
for the moment, here is what you need to know.
Outlook XP/2002 and later eliminated a lot of confusion by having one
mode, which supports all different types of servers. If you're using
Outlook XP or later, you don't have to worry about what mode you're in.
Outlook 2000 can be installed in three different modes. There is a mode for 'no
email', one for 'Internet mail only', and one for 'Corporate or
Workgroup'.
In order to fully utilize Exchange Hosting Service, you need to have
Outlook running in the Corporate or Workgroup mode.
Here's
how to determine which mode your copy of Outlook 2000 is currently operating in, and how to
switch to Corporate/Workgroup mode if necessary.
From the Help menu, choose About Microsoft Outlook.
If it's in Corporate or Workgroup mode, it will say so, as in the screen
shot above. If yours does not say Corporate or Workgroup, you need to
'reconfigure mail support'.
Changing from Internet Mail Only mode to Corporate/Workgroup mode
If you have not used Exchange server before, you may need to change your
Outlook configuration from "Internet Mail Only" mode to "Corporate or
Workgroup" mode.
In Outlook 2000 this is done from within Outlook. Previous versions
required you to run Outlook setup to make the change.
- On the Tools menu, click Options
- On the Mail Delivery tab, click Reconfigure Mail Support.
- On the email service options page, click to select the option you want, which is Corporate or
Workgroup. Click Next.
- Read the warning message and then click Yes. Outlook
will close.
- Start Outlook. The Windows Installer will start and
install the required files. You will need your Outlook or Office
CD-ROM.
- Close Outlook.
The next step is to add a new profile for Exchange Hosting
Service. See the Outlook 2000 profiles
page for step-by-step instructions on adding a new profile.
